A man in his 60s who was found dead after a house fire in Togher last night has been named locally, as public representatives have paid respect to the family of the deceased.

Gardaí in Togher are currently investigating all of the circumstances surrounding the death, which they were alerted to just before 7pm on Friday night. Michael O’Sullivan was discovered deceased inside the property.

The fire was contained to one room in the house.

The man was found in the house after fire services entered and brought the fire under control, while a woman managed to leave the house with the help of neighbours and was treated by ambulances at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Ger Ryan, Cork City Fire Bridage’s Third Officer, told The Echo last night: “There will be an investigation starting now as to what started the fire, and we will be helping the Gardaí with that.”

Investigating Gardaí have now preserved the scene as they work to determine the cause of the fire, and a post-mortem examination will take place on the body of the deceased in due course.

The results of this post-mortem, along with a technical examination of the scene, will guide the ongoing Garda investigation.

Local Councillor Fergal Dennehy said: “I want to express my deepest condolences to the family of the man who tragically lost his life in the devastating fire that has deeply impacted our entire community.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy that will affect many lives,” he said. "I want to commend the local neighbours who stepped in to assist a woman in safely exiting the premises. Their bravery and quick action in such a difficult situation are truly commendable.

“My thoughts are with the family, friends, and everyone affected by this terrible heartbreaking event.”

Sinn Féin TD for Cork South Central Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire said: “Desperately sad to hear of a man’s death in a fire on Togher road. My condolences to him and his family, and loved ones at this very difficult time and in such traumatic circumstances.

“A huge shock to them, and to the community particularly in the square, an upsetting and traumatic night, and unfortunately ultimately a tragic night. The sympathies of the wider community in Togher go to his family.”
