Gardaí have appealed for witnesses following a fatal road traffic accident in Clonakilty in the early hours of this morning. 

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to a single vehicle collision involving a car on the N71 in Clonakilty town at approximately 12.15am.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a male in his 50s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. 

His body was removed to Cork University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

No other injuries were reported. 

Gardaí said the road remains closed this morning to facilitate a technical examination of the scene by garda forensic collision investigators.

In a post on social media Cork County Council said eastbound traffic can travel through Clonakilty as normal, while westbound traffic continues to be diverted at Ballinascarthy. 

In a statement gardaí have appealed for any witnesses to the collision to come forward. 

"Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the area between 12.00am (midnight) and 12:30am are to make this footage available to gardaí.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Clonakilty Garda Station on 023 882 1570, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."

Gardaí are at the scene of a serious road traffic collision in Clonakilty.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána confirmed that the incident occurred in the early hours of this morning.

"Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the single vehicle collision on the N71 in Clonakilty town at approximately 12:15am," they said in a statement.

"The road is currently closed and local diversions are in place.

"No further information is available at this time."

In a tweet, Cork County Council warned that the road at Faxbridge (Scally's Supervalu) Roundabout has been closed.

"N71 Traffic is being diverted at Maxol Roundabout via R588 to Shannonvale to Ballinascarthy and at N71 Ballinascarthy in the opposite direction," they added.
