Cork City Council has opened two new public multi-use games areas to allow young people to take part in a range of sports and encourage active recreation within the city’s parks.
The multi-use games areas (MUGAs) were officially opened in recent days in Ballinlough and Grange, and saw a number of primary school students kick-off their launch.
Second class students from St Anthony’s Boys National School gave the new MUGA in Ballinlough a try, while sixth class pupils from Scoil Niocláis were invited down to take part in a fun outdoor PE class at the new facility at Grange.

During their sessions, both groups had a special visit from Green Party councillor Dan Boyle, Lord Mayor of Cork, who said it was great to see young people being active.
“The best thing about these MUGAs is that they are for everyone — young and old; every time I pass one it is in use,” said Mr Boyle.
“These amenities all over the city are very important to Cork being an active city, and Cork City Council will continue to promote physical activity to make it easier for everyone to get active.”
The MUGAs are equipped with both basketball hoops and soccer nets, and can be used for a wide range of games and activities.
David Walsh, sports and sustainability at Cork City Council, added: “MUGAs are great fun facilities — they are not weather-dependent and even on a cold December’s morning, boys and girls can get out and enjoy some active play.”
