Green Party councillor Dan Boyle, Lord Mayor of Cork, has unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the 20th anniversary of the operation of the city’s Black Ash Park & Ride.

Opened in 2004, the service has accommodated more than 2m uses over the 20-year period.

Located on Kinsale Rd and providing 940 car parking spaces, the Park & Ride offers a convenient service for people who work in the city, and those wishing to visit.

Mr Boyle said the service has become an essential part of the city’s infrastructure.

“The establishment of this service was, in many ways, ahead of its time, providing a sustainable transport solution for workers and shoppers in Cork,” said the Lord Mayor yesterday.

“I am confident that this service will continue to serve the people of Cork, further supporting our mission to reduce congestion within our city centre.”

To mark the anniversary, Cork City Council is running a competition on its social media channels, offering entrants a chance to win up to a year’s free parking.
