Uisce Éireann to brief policitians on bad smell in Mahon area

Uisce Éireann has confirmed that it will host a briefing with public representatives in the coming weeks regarding the ongoing issue over the smell in the Mahon area.

Investigations and improvement works relating to intermittent odour reports in the Mahon area are continuing, they said.

The utility company said it is “conscious of the level of interest in this matter locally” and wants to ensure elected representatives have access to “the most up-to-date information”.

The briefing will provide elected representatives with the latest information directly from Uisce Éireann, including a detailed operational update, and an update on the works underway and planned at the Ballinure Header Chamber site.

The meeting will also provide elected representatives with an opportunity to raise any questions directly with relevant operational and project teams.

“Invitations and further details regarding the briefing will issue shortly,” Uisce Éireann said.

Labour party councillor for the Cork city South East ward, Peter Horgan said while he welcomes moves being "finally made by Uisce Éireann to treat this issue seriously",  he takes issue with "their continued position that it is intermittent when any local will tell you the constant stench they have had to put up with".

“I will continue to advocate, prod, lobby and cajole until the required action is taken to halt the gas release and that a public health impact is undertaken," said Mr Horgan.
