'There is a sadness around the town': Pedestrian killed after car mounted footpath in Charleville named locally

A woman in her 70s who died after she was struck by a car which mounted the footpath on Main Street in Charleville, Co Cork yesterday as she was buying a ticket for the local GAA club Lotto has been named locally as Mary Feehily.

The incident occurred at around 2pm yesterday as Ms Fehilly was buying a Lotto ticket for a Charleville GAA from club official.
The man, who in his sixties, was taken to hospital having suffered serious but not life threatening injuries.
Mary Fehilly, who lives in Holycross Place in Charleville was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Local Fianna Fáil councillor Ian Doyle said that it was a “desperately sad” day in the town.
"It is shocking. There is a sadness around the town. I am just after coming from the Remembrance day in the graveyard here. It was in everyone’s mind today.
"She was buying a Lotto ticket from Johnny Collins who was injured as well but thankfully he will be okay.”
Charleville GAA have extended their "deepest sympathies to the Fehilly family following the tragic death of Mary yesterday on Main Street".
Fianna Fáil TD for Clare, Cathal Crowe, posted on social media that he was heartbroken at the loss of his mother-in-law Mary Fehilly.
Mr Crowe said he "struck gold" when he married in to his wife Maeve's “amazing” family.
"She was the most wonderful mother to Maeve and her siblings and an adoring wife to George.
"As we try to get to terms with Mary’s loss I will be temporarily standing-down my canvassing for the upcoming General Election.
"Mary, there will not be the likes of you again. Sleep gently with the angels."
The Fehilly family posted a notice on Rip.ie in which they thanked all of the First Responders, Garda Siochana, Charleville Fire Brigade, Helimed, all Good Samaritans who assisted at the scene. They also expressed their appreciation for the doctors and nurses of CUH arising out of the ‘kindness’ shown to Mary and her family.
Meanwhile, the scene in Charleville has been examined by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and the local coroner has been notified.
A post-mortem examination will be arranged.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.
They are also seeking mobile phone and dash-cam footage from anyone who was in the vicinity of Main Street, Charleville, at the time of the collision.
