A Cork weather station recorded its driest June in six years last month, according to Met Éireann’s weather statement for June 2024.

The national forecaster said June “was a relatively dry and cool month overall”.

All monthly rainfall totals across the country were below their 1981-2010 Long-Term Average (LTA) last month.

Percentage of monthly rainfall values ranged from 43% (a monthly rainfall total of 35.1mm) at Cork Airport — its driest June since 2018 — to 94% (a monthly rainfall total of 67.7 mm) at Finner in Donegal. The number of wet days (a day with 1mm or more of rain) ranged from five at Oak Park in Carlow to 16 at Newport in Mayo and Markree in Sligo.

The number of very wet days (a day with 10mm or more of rainfall) ranged from zero days at a few stations to four days at Newport.

Nearly all mean air temperatures were below their LTA for the month.

They ranged from 11.6C (0.6C below its LTA) at Knock Airport in Mayo to 13.7C at both Shannon Airport in Clare (0.8C below its LTA) and Roches Point in Cork (0.1C below its LTA).

The month’s highest temperature was reported at Phoenix Park in Dublin on June 24 with a temperature of 26.6C.

The month’s lowest air minimum was recorded on June 12 at Claremorris in Mayo with 1.8C, while the lowest grass minimum was -4C reported at Mullingar in Co Westmeath on June 11.

All available sunshine totals were above their LTA.

Monthly sunshine totals ranged from 124.7 hours at Belmullet in Mayo to 181.3 hours at Cork Airport.
