The new Youthreach facility in Macroom should be ready for full occupational use by January of next year.
In response to a parliamentary question, James Lawless, the minister for further and higher education, confirmed that Youthreach learners will move into the former Macroom post-office building on a phased basis, with full occupation anticipated by January 2027.
Earlier this year, Mr Lawless granted ministerial consent to Cork Education and Training Board (Cork ETB) to enter in to a lease for the former post office.
Cork ETB subsequently signed the agreement for lease in October, with minor fit-out works now underway.
The works include the conversion of open-plan areas to classrooms and workshops, with the new premises also providing classrooms, ICT facilities, and learning spaces.
Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea said that it is great to see significant progress being made on an important project for young people across the area.
“The existing Youthreach accommodation is no longer suitable for the needs of learners and staff, and securing a modern, fit-for-purpose facility has been an important priority.
“The former post-office building provides an excellent opportunity to establish a central, accessible, and energy efficient learning environment in Macroom.”
Macroom-based Fine Gael Cork county councillor Ted Lucey added: “I very much welcome the progress being made on securing a new home for Youthreach in Macroom. This is a positive development for the town.”
