A burglary at a gym in Cork city centre resulted in gardaí arresting a man aged 43 and objecting to bail being granted to him.
Applying for bail, the accused said he would stay out of Cork city except for court appearances and only come to Cork when his wife was with him.
Garda Conor Cronin arrested Connie Foley of Ceol na nÉan, Gould’s Hill, Mallow, and brought him before Cork District Court.
It was alleged that the burglary was committed at Blue Nile, French Church St, Cork.
The man was charged with trespass and theft.
Garda Cronin objected to bail being granted to Mr Foley in respect of the alleged crime on Monday, June 9. Objecting to bail, Garda Cronin said: “On June 10 an injured party reported a burglary incident on June 9 at the Blue Nile gym on the second floor of the premises at 14 French Church St.
“It was alleged that a male and a female entered an office forcefully that they did not have permission to be in, and stole a Dell laptop and a pair of Nike Air runners. Gardaí viewed CCTV.
“Connie Foley was arrested on June 18 and was wearing clothing seen on the CCTV of the incident.
“Gardaí have a serious concern that if granted bail he will commit further serious offences,” he said.
“He did not make any admissions when questioned,” Defence solicitor Shane Collins-Daly said.
“Drink is his main issue. I don’t think drugs are an issue for Mr Foley. He is now serious about getting help for his addiction and has been seeing a counsellor in Mallow.”
Applying for bail, Mr Foley said: “I will turn up in court [if granted bail]. I will abide by a curfew. I need help with the drink. I don’t have a drug addiction.”
Judge Mary Dorgan asked: “Gardaí fear you would commit further offences on bail — will you?”
“I will not, your honour,” he replied.
Concern was also expressed about the defendant coming to Cork city and committing offences.
“Any time I come to Cork it will be for court and I will bring my wife with me,” Mr Foley said.
Judge Dorgan said she would remand the accused in custody with consent to bail until June 26.
Bail terms include a €1,000 bond, on which €400 has to be lodged in cash, signing on twice a day at Mallow Garda Station, staying out of Cork except for court business, having no drink or drugs, and handing up his passport.
