Cork school recognises its student achievements at annual awards

A CORK secondary school recognised the success of its students at its recent Barr Bua awards.

The annual awards at St Peter’s Community School in Passage West saw students honoured for their academic excellence, leadership and extra-curricular achievements.

An award for a demonstration of academic excellence went to Éadaoin Farrell (transition year), and brother Ciarán (third year), who scooped the BT Young Scientist award earlier this year in their biological and ecological sciences category.

Tony McSweeney, principal at St Peter’s Community School said that St Peter’s is littered with individuals who show leadership by representing Ireland in various sports.

He highlighted how a number of students at the school were honoured throughout the year for their achievements in various sports such as rowing, basketball, Taekwondo, and figure skating.

Many of these students were also honoured with Barr Bua awards.

Amongst them were Eoin O’Connell and Francesca Kymagero who the school said performed particularly well in rowing and basketball respectively this year.

Members of the treble-winning U19 boys soccer team, who won the Munster and Ireland titles in the FAI B Schools competitions and the Cork U19 Schools Competition were also recognised.

Team captain Mark Lester, and super strikers Eoghan Farrell, Rhema Mbakwe along with Sean Coughlan all picked up awards for their various contributions to soccer and sport generally.

Mr McSweeney said that “the school looks forward to many more years of success”.

He added: “We wish all its sixth year students, including Barr Bua award winners every success in the future.”

The recent Barr Bua awards ceremony was attended by Aisling Roche, a past pupil of the school and current news anchor and reporter with Virgin Media news.
