Candidates to contest local elections in Cork city fall by 7%

A total of 76 candidates have been officially nominated to stand in the upcoming elections for Cork City Council –a 7% decrease on the numbers declared in 2019.
Polling takes place on Friday, June 7 and there are five electoral areas of the city with 31 members set to be elected to Cork City Council.
The period for receipt of nominations closed at noon on Saturday.
In the city, 11 parties are represented with 15 non-party candidates.
Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin are the parties with the joint highest number of candidates at 12 each followed by Fine Gael with 10 candidates.
Additionally, there are five Green Party/Comhaontas Glas candidates vying for election, five Labour Party candidates, five Social Democrats, three Aontú, three People Before Profit – Solidarity, three under the banner of The Irish People, two Independent Ireland and one from Ireland First.
Cork City Council said the number of female candidates has increased with 27 candidates having declared, amounting to 35.5% of the total number of candidates.
This is increased from 24 in 2019 which amounted to 29% of the total number candidates.
The five electoral areas in Cork city are South Central (six seats), South West (seven seats), North West (six seats), South East (six seats) and North East (six seats).
