Candidates to contest local elections in Cork county increase by 14%

A total of 122 candidates have been officially nominated to stand in the upcoming elections for Cork County Council – an increase of 14% on the numbers declared in 2019.
A total of 122 candidates have been officially nominated to stand in the upcoming elections for Cork County Council – an increase of 14% on the numbers declared in 2019.
Polling takes place on Friday, June 7 and there are 10 electoral areas of the county with 55 members set to be elected to Cork County Council.
The period for receipt of nominations closed at noon on Saturday.
In the county, 12 parties are represented with 22 non-party candidates.
Four parties, Independent Ireland, The Irish People, Ireland First, and Glór – Voice of the People, have nominated candidates for the first time.
Cork County Council said the number of female candidates has increased by more than a third with 41 candidates registering, up from 30 in 2019.
Fine Gael have the highest number of candidates in the county area at 24, followed by Fianna Fáil (23), then Independents (22), then Sinn Féin (10) and the Green Party (10).
Additionally, there are eight Independent Ireland candidates vying for election, seven Social Democrats candidates, six Aontú candidates, and five Labour candidates along with three from The Irish People, two from Ireland First, one from Glór – Voice of the People and one People Before Profit candidate.
The 10 electoral areas in County Cork are Bandon-Kinsale (six seats), Bantry-West Cork (four seats), Carrigaline (six seats), Cobh (six seats), Fermoy (six seats), Kanturk (four seats), Macroom (six seats), Midleton (seven seats), Mallow (five seats) and Skibbereen-West Cork (five seats).
