IN a unique event at City Hall, two of Cork’s best loved and most accomplished professional photographers found themselves on the other side of the camera for a change.

On Friday evening the Lord Mayor, Councillor Kieran McCarthy, honoured
and photographers Denis Minihane and Eddie O’Hare with a special reception.
Mr Minihane recently retired after 47 years, and Eddie O’Hare has been photographing Cork life for over 45 years.

Mr McCarthy noted in his speech that, were the reception not for the two men, in the normal run of things, one or other of them would probably be photographing it.

“This evening the focus is on you as skilled photographers, who have captured the emotions of big days in sport, art, politics, and community in this city and about this city,” he said.
Paying tribute for the images they created and the memories they captured, the Lord Mayor thanked Mr Minihane and Mr O’Hare.
“You were part of the furniture and part of the story of Cork which is all about people,” he said.

Fianna Fáil councillor Tony Fitzgerald said Mr Minihane and Mr O’Hare had both played a significant role in the city’s life.

“Denis and Eddie are part of the story of City Hall, and for nearly half a century through their lenses they’ve captured the events and the story of Cork,” he said.

“The role of a photographer is very difficult, there are some people who love getting their photo taken, and I would count politicians among them, but then there are some people who wouldn’t normally stand in for a photo in a million years.

“For that reason, photographers need serious people skills, and Denis and Eddie have that in spades.”
