GREEN Party councillor for Cork City North East, Oliver Moran, will host an information meeting this evening on planned changes to public transport in Glanmire.

The meeting will take place between 7.30pm and 8.30pm in the Riverstown Community Centre, and will highlight upcoming changes to the bus network.

This includes extending the 208 to Glanmire, as well as revising the 214 so that it does not travel via Togher, both of which are part of the expansion of the city bus network that is planned to begin rollout in a year’s time.

It comes as The Echo recently revealed that between December 9, 2023, and February 6, 2024, the 214 service left a stop early 7,552 times, left a stop late 75,416 times, and did not turn up at a stop 29,327 times.

Calling for “a comprehensive plan to prioritise public transport in the city so that it’s a reliable option for commuters”, Mr Moran said that increasing the number of services alone is not enough.

“The 214 was increased in frequency in 2021, but it’s still the most unreliable of services in the city,” he added.

“Reliability is what people want.”

He added that he is in very regular contact with the National Transport Authority on plans for BusConnects in Cork, which has promised to introduce significant improvements across the city.

Mr Moran added that there are also significant works taking place to do with the suburban rail and active travel that he will touch on at the meeting, explaining how they will be relevant to Glanmire.

He said: “As well as the planned new routes to Glanmire, I’ll also go through the public transport priority measures being planned and how these relate to the area.

“Those will have the greatest impact on the reliability of services for Glanmire and it’s where real transformation has to happen.”

There will be an opportunity for open discussion at the meeting.
