Woman with 65 previous convictions jailed following string of shoplifting offences in Cork

A five-month prison sentence was imposed on a woman for shoplifting because of what the judge described as the successive nature of her offending.

Christina Smith, 33, of Cork Simon Community also had 65 previous convictions including 31 counts of theft.

Sgt John Kelleher outlined her recent offences and Judge Mary Dorgan said there was a big loss to the stores in Cork where she had committed thefts.

On June 27 2023 at Kilkenny shop she stole €300 worth of jewellery and sunglasses.

On the same date she stole €335 worth of clothing from Tommy Hilfiger, Patrick Street, Cork.

She turned up at Dunnes Stores, Merchants Quay, on December 30 last and stole €113 worth of groceries.

On January 26 at Dunnes Stores, Merchants Quay, she stole €98 worth of clothing.

The most recent offence occurred on February 20 when she stole €30 of toiletries from Phelan’s pharmacy, Patrick Street.

Eddie Burke, solicitor, suggested that the court would have been familiar with the background to the accused and said: “Life is not easy for her. And she does have slips on occasions.”
