MUNSTER Technological University (MTU) is preparing to host more than 200 delegates at an international conference on open education research and policy in Cork later this month.

It will host the 15th annual Association of Learning Technology conference for Open Education Research, Practice and Policy in MTU’s Bishopstown Campus on March 27 and 28.

MTU is hosting the conference in partnership with the Association of Learning Technology (ALT), the leading professional body for learning technology in the UK.

More than 200 delegates from North America, the UK and other parts of the EU are set to arrive in Cork for the conference.

Open education seeks to widen access to and participation in education by removing barriers and making learning accessible through the likes of digital technologies and modern education practices.

The event will be co-chaired by Dr Gearóid Ó Súilleabháin, head of the Department of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL), MTU and Dr Tom Farrelly, senior lecturer, N-TUTORR Project, MTU.

Topics discussed over the two days will include ethical considerations surrounding the use of generative AI for open education resources, and its potential in making educational content more accessible; the connection between open education, open data, the open-source movement, and digital scholarship/librarianship.

The event will also explore the role of Open Educational Resources (OER) in serving marginalised groups and in promoting inclusivity, diversity and equity in open education.

A sectoral white paper on Open Educational Practices will be launched as part of the conference reception on March 27. This is an output from a €40m teaching and learning transformation programme, entitled ‘N-TUTORR’.

Further information on OER24 is available at www.oer2024.
