A 21-year-old man was ordered to do 240 hours of community service to avoid a five-month jail term for travelling in a stolen car.
Jordan Collins, of 36 Orrery Road, Gurranabraher, pleaded guilty to the offence at Cork District Court.
Sergeant Gearóid Davis said that, on August 22, 2023 at Churchfield Terrace West, where a car was taken possession of without consent of the owner, he allowed himself to be carried as a passenger.
The background to the incident was that the Volkswagen Tiguan was stolen from Dublin Pike, Cork, on August 21.
It was recovered the following day crashed at Churchfield Terrace West.
CCTV was recovered and two men were seen running from the crash scene.
One of them was identified as the accused who was prosecuted for travelling as a passenger in the car.
His solicitor Diarmuid Kelleher said this was the only time the young man was before the court for a matter like this and that he was living at home and actively seeking work.
Judge Mary Dorgan said that in those circumstances she would order him to do the community service order.
