Three fundraising events took place across Cork this week to raise funds for homelessness charity, Focus Ireland.

The events, organised by second year social sciences student at University College Cork (UCC) Danú Ó Liatháin, took place across The Rock Bar on College Rd, Cissie Young’s on Bandon Rd and at the New Bar on the UCC campus.

Ms Ó Liatháin said her studies, and time spent volunteering with the charity, drove her to organise the events, which, at the time of print, raised more than €1,000 for the service.

Speaking to The Echo, Ms Ó Liatháin said while the events were “a great success” in helping the fundraiser reach its target, the online donations page will remain open for a further week.

“On Monday night, we had a music quiz in the New Bar, which went very well – there were about 19 teams, so it was a good turnout,” said Ms Ó Liatháin.

“On Tuesday we then had a trad session at Cissie Young’s, and on Wednesday, there was another trad night at The Rock.

“The events were all donations-based, so there were no fees – but people were more than generous.

“There was an iDonate link available which is quite handy, but we also were given cash as well.

“Homelessness has always been a big issue in social policy and sociology both in Ireland and all over the world so I thought the fundraising events would be a nice thing to do.

“The money raised will be presented to Focus Ireland with a big cheque in the coming weeks, and we will be leaving the iDonate open for another week before closing – so if anyone out there wants to donate, there is still some time.” For more information on Focus Ireland, or to make a donation to the online fundraiser, visit: https://www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/danoliathin.
