SEVERAL houses in Cork city were evacuated early on Sunday morning following an incident in which gardaí deployed a stinger device to halt a vehicle which had earlier crashed into a number of parked cars.

A man in his 40s was arrested after what gardaí described as “a managed containment operation”.

Gardaí had attempted to stop a car in the Faggot Hill area north-west of the city when the vehicle took off towards Cork City.

The car collided with a garda car and number of stationary vehicles before gardaí deployed a stinger device and the car was brought to a stop on Thomas Davis Street in Blackpool.

No injuries were reported, but it is understood that as many as 30 homes were evacuated in the Blackpool area after a gas pipe was damaged.

A crew from Cork Fire Brigade carried out the evacuations while Gas Networks Ireland officials repaired the damaged pipe.

In a statement, the garda press office said:

“A man aged in his 40s has been arrested and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a garda station in Cork city”.

Thomas Davis Street remained closed on Sunday afternoon with local diversions in place.

“Investigations are ongoing,” the garda statement concluded.
