A Crosshaven-based councillor has said that a stretch of road in the coastal village was swept away by pounding waves during Storm Jocelyn late on Tuesday afternoon and that other sections of the same road were significantly undermined.
Cllr Audrey Buckley said a ‘large section’ of the Point Road was affected.
“This is a road serving around 80 residents and is used a lot by people walking up to Camden Fort Meagher,” she said.
The road, which has a steep 15 to 20-foot drop on its seaward side, had been the subject of a review by Cork County Council.
“We don’t know what impact this will have but it will take more than a sticking plaster to repair this road,” said Cllr Buckley.
“It’s work that will cost several hundred thousand euro.”
She said it was lucky that it was bright at around 5pm when the road collapsed as had it been dark it might have had more devastating consequences.
In an earlier report of damage caused by Storm Jocelyn, a fallen tree near Marino Point in Cobh was blocking a road and causing tailbacks.
Motorists are being advised to take care on approach.
