Bus service infrastructure in north Cork to be upgraded
Bus stops and shelters in four north Cork areas will be upgraded net year.
INTENDING bus passengers in four north Cork communities can look forward to more comfortable transport conditions in the new year following the announcement that the public transport infrastructure in Banteer, Kanturk, Millstreet and Newmarket is to significantly upgraded during 2024.
Thanks to what has been described as a 'significant investment' by the National Transport Authority (NTA) and Cork County Council, bus stops and shelters in each of the four villages and towns will be upgraded to ensure the facilities there comply with the Public Transport Accessibility programme.
North Cork Fine Gael Councillor John Paul O'Shea welcomed the announcement of the investment in the facilities in each area.
"As we move to encourage more people to use public transport, it is important we improve the experience for all users," said Mr O'Shea.
"When I say this, I mean improve the physical location of the bus stop to allow all users to access the bus when it stops, including those with mobility issues and wheelchair users.
Mr O'Shea added that north Cork was 'very lucky' to have many public transport services available, pointing to the Local Link Cork routes as well as Bus Éireann services.
"We have seen many improvements already in the area with the enhancement of the Bus Eireann route 257 Macroom to Killarney via Millstreet recently and now the proposed enhancements to Bus Eireann Route 243 through Newmarket and Kanturk," he said.
"We have also seen a significant expansion of the Local Link Cork service throughout North Cork over the last 12-18 months.
"With all these combined, it is important we invest in our towns and villages in order to make them more accessible for public transport”.
Cork County Council has developed this investment programme in conjunction with the NTA and all stakeholders.
Its aim is to move to other areas within north Cork once these have been completed.
