Páirc to host special Rebel Réalta day in early October

This year’s Rebel Réalta Sports and Activity Day will take place at Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Tuesday, October 6, bringing together children with additional needs from schools across Cork for a day of Gaelic Games and activities.

The event was launched at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh this week, with Cork players Seán Meehan, Darragh Fitzgibbon, Rosie Corkery and Orlaith Cahalane in attendance, representing football, hurling, ladies’ football and camogie.

Organised by Sciath na Scol, Rebel Réalta is designed to give children the opportunity to take part in football and hurling in an inclusive and supportive setting.

The programme will include skills sessions, mini-games and a range of activities, with one of the main attractions being the chance for participants to play on the iconic Páirc Uí Chaoimh pitch. Players, coaches, teachers, games development administrators and volunteers will help deliver the day.

The event is supported by Cork County Board, the Munster Council and Cork’s GDAs, while a number of local businesses and sponsors have also contributed to the initiative. ICS, Réalta Technologies, Rebel Óg and Pharmacare are among the sponsors, with Ashdale Catering and Spar Mount Oval also providing support.

David Collins, chairperson of Sciath na Scol, said the aim of Rebel Réalta is to create an environment in which children of all abilities can take part in Gaelic Games and enjoy the experience of being involved.

Rebel Réalta has developed into an important part of the schools’ sporting calendar, with the emphasis firmly on participation, enjoyment and inclusion.

Meanwhile, following requests from a number of clubs, the deadline for the Cork GAA Sustainable Clubs Competition has been extended to next Monday, September 28 at 12 noon.

The competition gives clubs an opportunity to showcase the sustainability work already taking place within their communities while developing plans for future environmental initiatives, with prizes of €6,000, €2,500 and €1,500.
