More than 100 admitted patients are waiting for beds at hospitals in Cork today.

Figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) show that 79 admitted patients are waiting for beds at Cork University Hospital.

The vast majority of these patients (66) are waiting in the hospital's emergency department while 13 are waiting in wards elsewhere in the hospital.

A further 13 admitted patients are waiting for beds at the Mercy University Hospital while nine patients are waiting for beds at Bantry General Hospital.

Nationally, 702 admitted patients are waiting for hospital beds with University Hospital Limerick (106), Cork University Hospital (79) and University Hospital Galway (52) the worst affected.

Last month, the INMO voiced serious concerns over the level of overcrowding at hospitals saying "the sheer volume of patients" who were admitted to hospitals without a bed in November were "far too high".

The INMO said that during November 11,493 patients, including 434 children, went without a bed in Irish hospitals.

Cork University Hospital was the second most overcrowded hospital with 1,159 admitted patients waiting for beds at the hospital over the month.
