Two crew members of a trawler tied up at Kennedy Quay and a passerby dived into the water earlier today to save the occupant of a car after the vehicle entered the River Lee.
After spotting the car entering the water, two crew members from a Belgian trawler, De Maria Antonia, dived in to rescue the female occupant of the vehicle.
understands that a passerby also entered the water in a bid to help.
The three people who jumped into the water broke the back window of the car and got the woman out.
They then secured the car to the side of the trawler.
The woman, who was the sole occupant of the car, has been taken to the Mercy University Hospital.
The three people who saved the woman were medically assessed at the scene and were deemed not require hospitalisation.
Second officer at Cork City Fire Brigade, Victor Shine, said the fire service was alerted at approximately 12.10pm to a report of a car entering the water at Kennedy Quay in the city.
Coast Guard crews, National Ambulance Service crews and Gardaí also attended the scene.
Mr Shine commended the bravery of the three who saved the woman from the water, describing their actions as a considerable “feat” which deserved recognition.
