'A tireless representative': Tributes to former Lord Mayor of Cork as he is laid to rest

THE funeral of former Lord Mayor of Cork, Joe O'Callaghan took place today at 12 noon in the Church of The Immaculate Conception, in his native Blarney.
Mr O’Callaghan passed away aged 75 on Thursday, peacefully in the presence of his loving family at Marymount University Hospital and Hospice following a long illness.
He was survived by his wife Mary and adult children Daire, Andrea, Vivienne and Cian, grandchildren Summer and Bradley, brother Con, and sisters Geraldine and Mary.

He was laid to rest following the requiem mass in Blarney this afternoon at All Saint's Cemetery in Garrycloyne.
The former trade union official was elected Lord Mayor in 1995, and also served as a councillor in both Cork North Central and Cork North West, serving as a member of both Labour and Fine Gael, as well as running as an Independent.
Paying tribute to Mr O’Callaghan in a public statement released after the news of his passing, Lord Mayor Kieran McCarthy, said: “On behalf of the people of Cork, I would offer my deepest condolences to Joe’s family, friends and the people he served as an elected member.

“Joe served a distinguished term as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1995 and will be remembered as a proud and dedicated trade unionist and a tireless representative for the communities he served.”
