Cork councillor announces shock departure from politics

The councillor said she will remain in her seat in Cork County Council until the new year.

AN East Cork councillor has announced her decision to exit politics in a poignant social media post.

Sinn Féin Councillor Danielle Twomey described the “worst week and a half of my professional career and personal life” in a lengthy post uploaded to Facebook.

“After what’s been the worst week and a half of my professional career and personal life, witnessing the devastation caused to families I know and am so fond of, I’ve been heartbroken,” the post read.

“For a long time, I have felt that I needed a break from politics, because of my all-or-nothing approach to everything I do. I’ve thrown my heart and soul into my council seat. Through my challenging and rewarding job, I’ve met amazing people and had the most amazing opportunities. However, I’ve also had to make some sacrifices and one of them was my family.

"I’ve missed so much of my family life already. I’ve missed first steps. I’ve missed big moments and I’ve missed opportunities to connect with my children due to being on the phone or due to not being there.”

Cllr Twomey also referenced the recent floods that wreaked havoc in Midleton in particular.

“The recent floods have really made me realise what is most important and I need to now give my all or nothing to my family for a while,” Ms Twomey said.

"I’ve decided I won’t be running for elections next year. I’ve wanted to step down for a while but this has made the decision easier for me.”

She also said that online harassment had led her to question whether she should remain in politics.

“I will continue in the seat until the new year and hope that the party will be in a position to coopt someone. I will then give that person my full support to build their profile and guide them in supporting you all to the best of their ability.”

Cllr Twomey extended her gratitude to the community.

“I want to thank you all for your amazing support throughout the eight years I have given to representing you all,” she said.

“It’s been the biggest honour of my life and I appreciate every single person that supported me, voted for me and has defended me.

"This isn’t the end for me, I no doubt will return to politics in the future, but my heart is in the activism and my heart is in the community and I will continue to serve the community in a volunteer capacity.”
