Cork city councillor Eolan Ryng announces resignation

Sinn Féin’s Eolan Ryng has been described as “an honourable man” following the announcement of his resignation on Monday.

Mr Ryng announced at October’s meeting of Cork City Council on Monday that he is standing down as the party’s Cork City Councillor for the South West Ward.

In 2021, Mr Ryng was selected by his party to fill Henry Cremin’s vacated seat following his retirement from frontline politics.

On Monday Mr Ryng said he made the decision after weeks of careful consideration, knowing that he cannot continue to give the role the level of attention it requires and deserves into the next election cycle.

“I am a person who always gives one hundred percent, and I know that won't be possible going forward. It was a hard decision but also the right one for me,” he said.

It has been an amazing experience to represent people, to stand up for them, to give them a voice. My time as a Sinn Féin City Councillor has been immensely positive.

“A process is now underway to select my replacement. The party will make an announcement in due course.

"That person will have my full support in advancing republican politics and in delivering for workers, families and communities in the South West and throughout Cork City.

“I will remain a dedicated party activist and I look forward to playing my role in Cork Sinn Féin’s preparations for the forthcoming Local Elections.”

His statement was met by well wishes from fellow councillors in the Chamber who reflected on his successes during his time in the role.

Councillor Derry Canty acknowledged his hard work, describing him as “fantastic” at Council meetings and local area meetings and someone who worked out and discussed problems with other representatives.

Politics never came into it, it was always for the betterment of the residents in the area.

Fine Gael Councillor Garret Kelleher said there was “nothing but good things said in our community in Ballincollig and indeed Bishopstown about Eolan” and described him as “a decent, honourable man".

Councillor Colm Kelleher, on behalf of Fianna Fáil, acknowledged Mr Ryng’s “hard work” on behalf of the people of Bishopstown and Ballincollig.

“You always had a pragmatic approach to everything you did and as I said you will be missed,” he said.

Councillor Mick Nugent described Mr Ryng’s resignation as “bittersweet for the Sinn Féin group and wider party” and said he proved during his time that he is “a first-class public representative”.
