Cork woman who stole charity box from shop counter is jailed

The woman has been jailed for four months.

A Cork woman who was involved in stealing a charity box from the counter of a shop was jailed for four months for the “desperately mean offence”.

Judge Marie Keane made that comment as she jailed 35-year-old Noreen Foley of no fixed address for the offence.

Shane Collins-Daly solicitor said that unfortunately, the defendant was well known to Cork District Court.

Sergeant Gearóid Davis said she had 65 previous convictions, including 39 for theft.

Mr Collins-Daly said, “She is a lady with significant health difficulties. And addiction difficulties in relation to intoxicants and prescription medication, together with psychiatric issues and homelessness. She is in and out of custody.”

Sergeant Davis said the charity box was stolen from the counter of Mace in Turner’s Cross on June 4 2022.

“A man took the charity box from the counter and handed it to Noreen Foley and they both left with the charity box,” Sgt. Davis said.

On August 24 2022 Noreen Foley was found to be drunk and a danger to herself or others at the supermarket in Merchants Quay, Cork.
