Man given community service for threatening Cork post officer worker

Frahill had gone to the post office to claim his social security benefit money but did not have the correct PPS card identification and the woman working at the counter was unable to issue his money as a result.

A man who threatened a post office worker and caused a scene at a post office counter because he did not have the correct identification to claim his social welfare benefit money acted in a disgraceful way according to the presiding judge.

Court presenter Sergeant Trish O’Sullivan told Macroom District Court that Gino Frahill, aged 34, with an address at Coolcower House, Coolcower, Macroom, went to Macroom Post Office at 3.40pm on October 21, 2024.

Frahill had gone to the post office to claim his social security benefit money but did not have the correct PPS card identification and the woman working at the counter was unable to issue his money as a result.

The court heard that Frahill became “very aggressive and abusive”, was hitting the counter with his fists, and kicked the lower part of the counter. He also shouted at the woman behind the counter: “I’ll teach you f**king respect yet.”

Sgt O’Sullivan said that the woman was in fear to such an extent that she even offered to give Frahill some money from her own purse in an attempt to claim him down. The gardaí were called but Frahill had left the scene before they arrived. The court was told that Frahill had 34 previous convictions, including 12 for public order offences.

Defence solicitor, Sean Cahill, said Frahill was “deeply ashamed” of his behaviour which came from frustration at not being able to claim his benefit money. Frahill said that he had a PPS card which he believed was valid at the time.

Judge Joanne Carroll said: “You can’t treat a postmistress like that. She has procedures she has to go through, she has to dot the i’s and cross the t’s or she could get in a lot of trouble.” The judge said that Frahill behaved “in a disgraceful way” and he was convicted of threatening and abusive behaviour and sentenced to 50 hours community service in lieu of two months in prison.
