A Knocknaheeny man whose baby son passed away three years ago is planning a charity skydive in his memory and to raise funds to help other children dealing with illness.

Colin Curran, who works as a porter at the Mercy University Hospital (MUH), will this month complete a charity skydive in memory of his little boy, Sonny, who sadly passed away on October 18, 2020 at just 25 days old.

When Sonny was born, he was diagnosed with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH), meaning he had a hole in his diaphragm; and he sadly passed away in the care of the staff of Crumlin Children’s Hospital a few weeks later.

Three years on, on what would have been Sonny’s third birthday, Colin will complete a charity skydive in aid of the MUH Foundation’s Kids & Teens Appeal, remembering the little boy who, in his short life, touched the lives of his family and the lives of so many people in the close-knit community on Cork’s northside.

Colin will be joined by a group of colleagues from MUH, among them his fellow porters, Phil Aldridge, Evan Cashman, James Taylor, Micheal Murray and Jimmy McCarthy, as well as healthcare assistant Jason O’Sullivan, and they will complete the charity skydive on Saturday September 23 at the Irish Parachute Club in Co Offaly.

Speaking ahead of the skydive, Colin said that each year, he and his wife Karen mark Sonny’s birthday in a special way.

“This year I am delighted that my colleagues from the Mercy, a hospital which means so much to so many in our local community, will join me in honouring Sonny’s memory, by taking to the skies with me,” he said.

“The funds we raise will help other families with sick children in the Mercy to have the most comfortable experience possible, in what is a very difficult time in their lives.”

Thanking Colin and the other MUH staff who will undertake the skydive, Louise O’Brien, community fundraiser at the MUH Hospital Foundation, said it was vital that when a child is ill, they and their parents and siblings have access to the best care, facilities and support.

“The Mercy has a 28-bed paediatrics ward that caters for both medical and surgical care, and the Mercy University Hospital Foundation constantly strives to ensure that every child has a comfortable stay at the Mercy,” she said.

“The children’s ward and Leukaemia unit continue to provide treatment and care to Munster’s smallest patients, and through funds raised through events like the ‘Sonny Curran Memorial Skydive’, will continue to provide the support they deserve.”
