Gardaí in North Cork have found what is described as “a significant number of firearms” in woods about eight miles north of the city.

The find occurred while gardaí attached to Watergrasshill Garda Station were carrying out a search of a wooded area at Templemichael on Thursday morning as part of ongoing investigations into reports of illegal dumping in the area.

The search resulted in the recovery of what An Garda Síochána has said was a significant quantity of firearms.

In a statement, gardaí said the weapons would be subject to further technical and ballistic analysis.

They added that no arrests had been made at this time, and investigations are ongoing.
