Defence Forces come under 'small arms fire' in Lebanon

Members of the Irish Defence Forces have come under fire in south Lebanon.

The 127th Infantry Battalion came under "small arms fire" at 6.30 pm on Thursday evening, but "all personnel are well and accounted for".

The Defence Forces says the Battalion were out on patrol in armoured vehicles when the attack happened, and "initiated immediate action drills".

This is one of the last tours of duty Irish soldiers will perform as part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon as the mission will soon be stood down.

Minister for Defence Helen McEntee has condemned the incident and commended the personnel involved for their professionalism in extremely challenging circumstances.

“I have been fully briefed by the Chief of Staff, and I want to commend the personnel involved for their professionalism in extremely challenging circumstances. I am particularly relieved that all members of the patrol returned safely to base.

“Defence Forces personnel continue to play a vital role in South Lebanon, and their commitment and conduct remain of the highest standard.”
