Update: Major search operation in Cork city stood down; Deceased person recovered from River Lee

UPDATE:

A major search operation in the city has been stood down after a person was tragically found deceased in the water.

Cork City Missing Persons Search and Recovery were asked by the Crosshaven Coast Guard to assist in the multi-agency search for a vehicle spotted entering the River Lee this afternoon, near the Port of Cork in the city.

In a statement on social media, the Missing Persons organisation said: "We immediately deployed our side-scan sonar and the vehicle was located and the naval dive team recovered the person from the vehicle, RIP...

"We would like to pass on our condolences to the family."

The search had included the Crosshaven Coast Guard, Crosshaven RNLI, navy divers, An Garda Síochána, Cork City Fire Brigade and Mallow Search and Rescue. 

EARLIER

A major search operation is underway in Cork city this afternoon after reports that a car was seen entering the River Lee close to the city centre.

An Irish Coast Guard helicopter is conducting low sweeps over the river channel close to the Port of Cork.

Meanwhile, members of Crosshaven RNLI lifeboat crew conduct sweeps of the river between the city centre and the Marina.

Gardai, fire crews and paramedics are on standby.
