LATEST: Gardaí in Fermoy are investigating after a male cyclist aged 60 was pronounced dead at the scene following a collision between a car and his bicycle.

The collision took place on the R639 between Fermory and Rathcormac at approximately 7am.

"The coroner has been notified and his body has been removed to the morgue at Cork University Hospital," a Garda spokesperson said. 

Garda Forensic Collision Investigators are currently at the scene and the road is currently closed.

Gardaí are appealing to any witnesses or any road users in the area who may have dashcam footage to contact Fermoy Garda station on 025 82100, the Garda confidential line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

EARLIER: A male cyclist has died following a collision that took place on the R639 this morning. 

It is understood the crash, which took place at approximately 7am, involved a car and a bicycle. 

Gardaí are at the scene, which is being preserved for technical examination. 

Local diversions are in place in the area; the collision happened between Rathcormac and the junction of the M8. 

The R639 has been closed between Rathcormac and the junction of the M8 due to a serious collision. 

The incident took place at approximately 7am and emergency services were called to the scene. 

A number of units of the fire brigade attended, from both Fermoy and Mitchelstown. 

Emergency services remain at the scene and motorists are asked to use an alternative route.

"Gardaí are currently at the scene of a serious road traffic collision," a spokesperson confirmed. 

"The road is currently closed and local diversions are in place." 

Elsewhere, traffic is slow on the M8 southbound approaching the Dunkettle Interchange. 

It's also slow approaching the Interchange on the N40 eastbound with delays back to J8 Douglas.

Heading towards the city centre, it’s busy on the South City Link Rd onto Albert St.

Its slow coming in from Blackpool down the N20 to Christy Ring Bridge 

The N28 inbound has delays down Carrs Hill.
