Gardaí are investigating after a vacant house went up in flames in Ballincollig last night.

Five units of the fire service responded to a call out after a blaze broke out at a derelict farmhouse near Heathfield estate in the city suburb around 8pm.

The third Officer at Anglesea Fire Station Ger Ryan told The Echo the firefighters used a compressed Air Foam System and three 70mm jets to prevent blaze reaching an adjacent oil tank.

There was no nearby water source so the emergency services had to ferry water to the house fire with their water tanker truck.

An aerial ladder platform was also used as the building was deemed too dangerous for crews to enter.

The emergency services were there from 8pm until 1am this morning, quenching the fire and Gardaí have appealed for witnesses.
