Gardaí in Co Donegal have launched a crackdown on motorists using illegal licence plates.

A number of motorists were stopped for having 'non-confirming' plates on their cars.

Members of the Letterkenny Road Policing Unit carried out the crackdown.

Motorists were stopped and received fines for having various illegal plates.

Each illegal plate, the front and the back, costs drivers €60 in fines.

Drivers must also replace the license plates.

The illegal plates include those that have custom or non-standard fonts, incorrect sizes, colours or spacing, no EU flag or “IRL” identifier and those that are designed to defeat Garda ANPR systems.

A garda spokesperson said they wanted to remind motorists that all registration plates must meet Irish format and visibility standards.
