A spokesperson for the airport confirmed there was a technical issue with a Cessna 172 light aircraft on runway 25.

The two pilots, one a trainee, emerged from the incident unharmed and there was no impact on airport operations.

The aircraft itself only suffered minimal damage and will be repaired and airborne again soon.

The Air Accident Investigation Unit has launched a formal investigation into the incident, which happened at lunchtime today.

The instructor was overseeing a student pilot who flew several landings and take-offs when one of the aircraft’s wheels failed.

Emergency services were put on standby but the plane touched down safely.
