TV series traces the roots of Cork name
WHAT’S in a name? The question posed by William Shakespeare is the motivation behind the new TG4 series Sloinne, which started last week.
It delves into the incredible stories behind Ireland’s most common surnames, making history come alive in a way that’s easy for everyone to enjoy.
Each episode features a special guest exploring their family surname, taking us on a journey back in time.
In the next episode, set to air on Sunday January 28 at 8.30pm, we travel to Cork as Noelle Gallagher (Ní Mhurchú), daughter of the late Liam Ó Murchú, learns more about her surname.
It is a journey that takes her from Dublin to Wexford and onward to Cork, the area most associated with the surname.
The fourth episode of the series on February 11 returns to Cork, as Seán Ó Súilleabháin goes in search of the story and history behind the O’Sullivan surname, and as one would expect it will inevitably take him to the Rebel County.
Other surnames featured in the seven-part series are Ó Flaithearta, Ó Ceallaigh, Ó Domhnaill, Seoighe and Ó Conchubhair.
