Autumn wardrobe reset... You can turn your clothes into timeless outfits

Cork stylist Fiona Lemasney chats to EMMA CONNOLLY about how to shop our wardrobes and avoid the dreaded scenario of ‘I’ve nothing to wear’
Autumn wardrobe reset... You can turn your clothes into timeless outfits

As a personal shopper at Brown Thomas Cork, Fiona Lemasney says the most common complaints she hears are:

I have a wardrobe full of clothes but nothing to wear.

I am tired of wearing the same look over and over again.

I have so many clothes but no outfits.

I don’t feel like myself in anything I own.

But, she says, some simple changes will get your wardrobe into great shape.

Fiona says all it takes is having some timeless and classic pieces that you can turn into an outfit.

First, she advises, look at what’s in your wardrobe and ask yourself these questions:

Does this still fit?

Have I worn it yet this year?

Do I feel confident in it?

Can I style it multiple ways?

If you don’t know where to start, begin with three boxes:

Trash - worn-out, damaged pieces, and any items with stains, these are all for the bin.

Donate - pieces that don’t fit well - recycle anything that you would not wear again.

Sell - any items with tags you haven’t worn or occasion pieces that you have only worn once and are in perfect condition.

Fiona says she finds find Depop, Vinted and Vestiaire Collective a great platform for selling and giving your clothes a second chance.

Next, try everything on and see what you like, what fits, and what you can turn into an outfit.

Don’t worry about trends, learn how to style what you already own, she says.

Everything in your wardrobe you should need, love, and wear. Find your comfort zone, and remember it’s just about building your confidence, Fiona adds.

FIONA’S TOP TIPS

Everybody will have a different look, but there are a few must have basics such as t-shirts, denims, blazers, and fine knits.

The largest part of your wardrobe should be made up of core colours, such as black, navy, grey and white because they are neutrals and they go with everything. Remember, ‘I have a wardrobe full of clothes and nothing to wear’. Versatility is key. You can always add in micro trends such as the colour of the season.

Accessories like a statement belt will tie any outfit together - a minimalist belt always works in any wardrobe.

Take photos of what looks you like and save them to an album on your phone. It will simplify getting ready in the morning and you will always have a look ready. I love using Pinterest boards for inspiration and this gives me confidence in how to create an outfit formula.

When it comes to office style, separates are a great option – budget friendly/easy to style, they can make a variety of outfits. If you struggle with sizing and you are in-between on the bottom half and top, think of alterations.

For trousers, tailored or ankle length styles, are great for a smart business look. This season, wide leg trousers are so on trend; fit is key with lovely colour tones such as French grey or beige.

We all often have too many pairs of denims but not the right ones. When you go shopping for denims, try on a lot of styles and brands, see what suits your body shape. I find mid or high rise works for most of my clients.

Dark denim is best if you’re looking for a polished yet relaxed smart casual look and a light wash for a summer laid back look.

Wide-leg and straight leg have been popular choices this season.

Really look at premium brands rather than following trends of the seasons. Don’t be afraid to mix casual items like a T-shirt or add a blazer for a more formal look.

Invest in a button-down shirt, the key is choosing a high-quality fabric like a crisp cotton or a beautiful silk. Pay attention to a defined collar and cufffor a more stylish touch.

Midi skirts made from silks, suede or leather are a great option in your wardrobe. These can be paired with a variety of separates for a dressy or casual look. Wear with trainers or knee-high boots, but for a more feminine look choose a fitted body-suit or camisole, belted with a blazer and heel.

A blazer is your hardest working piece in your wardrobe. This can be oversized, double breasted, single breasted, tailored, cropped, black, neutral or tweed. We should all have at least one option – it’s an essential for any dress code.

Long trench coats are timeless, classic and elevate any outfit. They can be dressed up or down, with a hoodie and leggings or a smart everyday look for the office.

Your trench can be a great layering option, just remember to pick fabrics such as wool or cotton and opt for solid colours.

Lastly, dressing up should be all about having fun and trying different things, mixing and matching and expressing who you are. The best style is the one which makes you happy and confident, there is no wrong way.
