Grab the girls: Host of Galentine's events taking place in Cork

Kiera Sheehan from Chroma Club is hosting a Galentine's Day event at Crawford and Co tonight.

Not everyone is a fan of Valentine’s Day.

Whether you’re in a relationship or single, the ubiquitous flowers, cards, cheesy gifts, and set menu dinners can feel like a bit much.

For those looking for an alternative to the traditional romantic holiday, the arrival of Galentine’s Day in recent years has been a breath of fresh air.

What started out on an episode of the US comedy series Parks And Recreation has since become a global celebration of female friendship.

Galentine’s Day is all about having fun with the other women in your life.

It was originally intended to be celebrated on February 13, but there are now events held throughout the week to mark the occasion.

And this year, if you’re looking to get together with your nearest and dearest, or take yourself on a solo date, there’s plenty to choose from in Cork.

Chroma Club Galentine’s Paint & Sip – Crawford & Co

Chroma Club is the brainchild of Limerick-based illustrator Kiera Sheehan, also known as The ColourPop Brunette.

To celebrate Galentine’s Day, Kiera is hosting a Paint & Sip event at Crawford & Co.

Attendees can look forward to a creative, interactive and fun night of painting on canvases.

All materials are provided, and no prior experience is needed. This will be a two-hour event full of Valentine’s quizzes, games, snacks, and prizes to be won. There will also be music to get everyone dancing and in a good mood for the evening.

For anyone who loves crafting or wants to try something new, this is the perfect Galentine’s event.

“Chroma Club is about setting time aside for yourself for a few hours and enjoying crafting and meeting some new people,” says Kiera.

“This Galentine’s, celebrate with besties, lovers, or pop along on your own. Everyone is welcome.”

Chroma Club takes place on Thursday, February 13, from 7-9pm at Crawford & Co, Anglesea Street.

Tickets are €40 and available from www.thecolourpopbrunette.com

Girls Night Out – Urban Social Cork @ Rosie Maddison Cork

Throughout the weekend, Urban Social will be hosting special Galentine’s events, led by Soul Yoga Cork, designed to help you nurture your mind, body and soul.

The event begins with a flow yoga class to music, which is suitable for all levels. This is followed by a sauna and dip in the cold plunge pool. Afterwards, guests are invited into the adjoining pub Rosie Maddison for Prosecco and sharing boards.

“Girls Night Out is the perfect way to spend quality time with your girls,” says Val Murphy, owner of Soul Yoga Cork.

“Get in that important self-care, indulge in good food, and sip on a glass of Prosecco or nozecco while having wholesome chats.”

The yoga class will take place in Urban Social’s heated, covered garden, and the sauna and ice baths are nearby in a dedicated outdoor space. If you want to freshen up before heading in for bubbles and food, there is a changing area equipped with hair dryers and mirrors.

For anyone who wants to have fun with friends while taking care of their wellbeing, this event strikes the perfect balance.

“It’s the new ‘out out’ without breaking the bank, and with a little bit of balance,” says Val.

“Let the endorphins of a good night out hit you in a different way - detoxed, nourished with good food, be more present, and you don’t have to sacrifice totally on the Prosecco or non-alcoholic treats either.”

Girls Night Out takes place at various times from February 14 to 16 at Urban Social, Bandon Road. Tickets are €35 and available through @urbansocial.cork on Instagram.

When Harry Met Sally – Triskel Arts Centre

For those looking for an alternative to the pub, Triskel Arts Centre is showing the classic romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally on Friday evening.

While not strictly a Galentine’s event, this funny and charming movie is ideal to watch with friends.

Grab a bite to eat in town before or after, and you’ve got the perfect Galentine’s evening out.

Chris O’Neill, Head of Cinema at Triskel Arts Centre, explains why this timeless movie is such a good one for Galentine’s Day.

When Harry Met Sally is one of the all-time great comedies about friendships and romantic relationships.

“Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are wonderful in the lead roles, with memorable support from Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby as their friends. It has a sharply funny script by Nora Ephron (which was nominated for an Academy Award), and strong direction by Rob Reiner,” says Chris. “And, of course, there is the now-legendary restaurant scene. It’s a fun movie and perfect for Galentine’s.”

When Harry Met Sally will be screened on Friday, February 14 at 6pm at Triskel Arts Centre. Tickets €10.50 from www.triskelartscentre.ie.
