Cork boutique owner: I can’t wait to begin my new journey

A new day is dawning for Shirley Barry on Main Street, Midleton, this Friday, when she takes over ownership of Cali Boutique.

“I am both excited and daunted!” says Shirley, who lives in Ballycotton.

Where did Shirley, from a family of 10, get her love and flair for fashion?

“My love of fashion came from my late mum, Mary McGowan,” says Shirley.

“Mum was always dressed beautifully. I think she got her taste for fashion from her own mother as she too had a good eye for beautiful clothes.

“For all our communions and confirmations, I remember mum would go to Mannix and Culhanes, Godsils, or to Roches Store for her clothes.”

Shirley has lovely memories of those days.

“My first memory as I walked into these beautiful boutiques was the greeting we’d receive from the staff,” she says.

“They knew their customers by name, and they always had time for a friendly chat. Mum always felt she had that personal shopping experience. The staff would dress her from had to toe for those special occasions.”

Mrs McGowan was a dedicated follower of fashion.

“Mum never wore trousers,” says Shirley. “She loved her skirts and blouses. She would always speak about the quality of her clothes and how well they were made.”

Shirley followed the fashion trend. She was always well turned out.

“Mum, when she had it, would always give me a few pounds to go into town and buy myself an outfit for going out,” says Shirley.

“She couldn’t wait until I got home to see what I had purchased. 

Mum loved seeing all her daughters dress well, which was a testimony to her love for fashion and her as an amazing mum.

Mrs McGowan would love to be at the grand opening of Cali Boutique on Friday. She would be so proud of her daughter.

“As I get ready to open the shop; I wish she could be with me on this exciting journey,” says Shirley.

She now wants to repeat the lovely shopping experience she enjoyed with her mother and grandmother.

“I want to implement those personal touches into my shop, giving customers the one-to-one experience,” says Shirley.

“In Cali, we’ll provide a personal shopping service two days a week in a comfortable and relaxed environment. We’ll cater to women of all ages and budgets, finding you that perfect piece.”

Shirley and her colleagues will give valuable feedback to their customers.

“We will give each customer honest advice, allowing them to leave the shop feeling confident and special.”

The stock Shirley carries is special and it is unique.

“We are introducing very exciting brands to the store,” says Shirley. “And we are catering for all ages.”

She explained further: “Drawing inspiration from the bygone years of customer service, Cali Women’s Wear aims to revive the charm of personalised shopping.

With a commitment to offering a one-on-one shopping experience, the boutique will introduce a personalised shopping service twice a week.

“Customers can expect dedicated assistance in a relaxed environment, tailored to their individual preferences and budgets.

“Each visitor will receive honest advice and personalised recommendations, ensuring they leave feeling confident and special.

“Cali Women’s Wear is not just a store; it is a testament to inclusivity and diversity in fashion.

Catering to women of all ages, the boutique has put together a brand collection that celebrates individuality and style.

Cali will offer diverse options, ensuring there is something for every discerning shopper.”

Shirley is very impressed with the town of Midleton.

“It has become one of the thriving fashion hubs in Cork,” she says.

“We have an excellent train service form Cork to Midleton, and we encourage ladies to spend a day shopping in our many splendid boutiques, each offering something different.”

Other delights are on offer in the town too.

“And you can dine out in one of our amazing Midleton restaurants!” says Shirley.

What is she thinking, days before she embarks on the fashion adventure of a lifetime?

“As I open my doors with a sense of excitement, the thrill of a dream and the hope for success can be very overwhelming and daunting,” says Shirley.

One of the team, Thelma Crotty, who has many years of experience in retail, is excited to working alongside her enthusiastic colleague.

“A new business in town is always an exciting prospect,” says Thelma.

“And it is great for the main street. I’m really looking forward to the new Cali experience.”

Thelma has had a sneak preview.

“Shirley is introducing fabulous accessories to complete the individual look for every women.,” says Thelma.

“She has a wonderful selection of handbags in stock that ladies will love.”

It’s all good news for Midleton.

“I have known Shirley a long time now,” says Adrianna Hegarty, President of Midleton Chamber of Commerce.

“I am really excited to hear the good news that she is taking ownership of Cali. and seeing her bringing her style and business acumen to this town.”

Shirley has many strings to her bow.

“She is already a great addition to our business community,” says Adrianna.

“She is active on our Feast Committee within the chamber.”

She is actively getting ready to open the door to her dream.

“I can’t wait to begin my new journey,“ says Shirley.
