Major Irish Cancer Society conference returns to Cork this month

Nearly 500 cancer patients, survivors and supporters attended the Living Well With and Beyond Cancer conference when it was last held in Cork.

Some of Ireland’s leading doctors, dieticians, psychotherapists and researchers are set to gather in Cork this November.

The Irish Cancer Society’s national conference ‘Living Well With and Beyond Cancer’ is taking place in the city's Clayton Hotel Silver Springs on Saturday, November 18th, bringing together a wide range of speakers who will share their experiences, stories and expert knowledge on living well through and beyond a cancer diagnosis.

Hosted by clinical psychologist, Dr Eddie Murphy, the conference will be hosted both online and in-person, marking the event's first return to Cork since it was last held here pre-pandemic.

The conference will be hosted by Dr Eddie Murohy, a fan favourite on Operation Transfromation.

Its most recent iteration in Cork in 2018 saw nearly 500 cancer patients, survivors and supporters come together for the conference — and this year's turnout is expected to be just as strong. A compelling range of experts are lined up to cover a variety of topics, from self-care to nutrition and financial guidance, and attendees will have ample time to meet and mix with others affected by cancer.

Looking ahead to the conference and encouraging people to sign up for free, Corrinne Hasson, Director of Services with the Irish Cancer Society said: “There are now over 200,000 people in Ireland living with and beyond cancer. As the number of survivors continues to grow, we want to be there to tell each and every individual and family impacted by a cancer diagnosis that you are not alone. There is a vibrant and active community here in Ireland willing to share and discuss their personal experience, and from an Irish Cancer Society perspective, we’re there to offer what supports we can.”

The Irish Cancer Society supports cancer survivors in a number of ways, providing peer support, free counselling and education and wellbeing programmes as well as funding research in the area of cancer survivorship.

She continued: “The conference, which runs from 10am through to 4pm, is completely free to attend and we encourage anybody affected by a cancer diagnosis, whether you are a patient and well enough to join us, or you are a survivor, a carer or a loved one of somebody, come along and meet people and make use of the supports and services that are on offer. Supports and services available on the day include everything from our Cancer Nurses being on hand to answer any questions you may have, exercise classes and practical financial guidance.”

She concluded: “Expert speakers will also talk us through significant advances in cancer research which is now transferring over into clinical care. In the 1960s, 3 in every 10 people who were diagnosed with cancer survived, compared to today, when 6 in 10 people survive. It is through those advances that we will catch cancer quicker from an early-detection point of view, but also be in a better position to treat cancer.”

If this conference is for you, sign up for free to attend either online or in-person at the Irish Cancer Society's official website.
