A look at British record signings following Morgan Rogers’ switch to Chelsea

Morgan Rogers has joined Chelsea for a fee understood to be £117million.

Here, we take a look at the most expensive British players of all time.

Morgan Rogers (£117m)

Rogers signed a seven-year deal on Tuesday to become the Blues’ record signing, having recently helped England to a third-place finish at the World Cup.

The 23-year-old former Middlesbrough player last season helped Aston Villa secure Europa League glory and a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Elliot Anderson (£116m)

Rogers’ transfer ended Anderson’s brief stint at the top of the pile, the Whitley Bay-born midfielder having agreed a club-record switch to Manchester City from Nottingham Forest earlier this month.

Having failed in two previous offers for the 23-year-old, who joined Forest from Newcastle in 2024 for £35m, City were successful with a third, with Anderson’s arrival seeing him overtake Jack Grealish as the club’s most expensive signing.

Declan Rice (£100m)

Rice moved across London from West Ham to Arsenal in 2023 for a club-record fee of £100m, potentially rising to £105m.

The England vice-captain has since cemented his status as one of the country’s best midfielders, last season helping the Gunners win their first Premier League title since 2004.

Jack Grealish (£100m)

Grealish joined Manchester City from Aston Villa in 2001 for a then-British record fee of £100m.

The Birmingham-born midfielder went on to help Pep Guardiola’s side win the treble in 2023, before spending last term on loan at Everton.

Harry Kane (£100m)

Following months of speculation, England captain Kane finally left boyhood club Tottenham for Bayern Munich in a bid to fulfil his dream of winning silverware.

The Premier League’s second highest scorer has so far registered 146 goals in 147 games for Bayern, helping the Bavarian club to Bundesliga titles in the past two seasons.

Jude Bellingham (£88.5m)

England star Bellingham left Borussia Dortmund for Real Madrid in 2023 for an initial fee of £88.5m which could rise to £115m.

The then-19-year-old signed a six-year deal at the Bernabeu, and in his first campaign helped Los Blancos clinch LaLiga and Champions League glory.

Gareth Bale (£85.1m)

Having established himself on the scene over an impressive few years with Tottenham, Bale joined Real Madrid for a then world-record fee of £85.1m in 2013, eclipsing the £80m the Spanish club paid Manchester United for Cristiano Ronaldo four years earlier.

The former Wales captain scored 106 goals in 258 appearances and helped the capital club win the Champions League five times.

Harry Maguire (£80m)

Harry Maguire became the most expensive defender of all time when he made the switch from Leicester to Manchester United in 2019, surpassing the £75m Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil van Dijk.

The 33-year-old Yorkshireman, who was club captain from 2020 until 2023, has made 271 appearances for the Red Devils and his resurgence in form helped earn a third-place Premier League finish last term.
