The biggest sporting moments of 2025

From Rory McIlroy's heroics in Augusta to Kate O'Connor at the World Championships, it has been yet another memorable year for Irish sport.
From being in stadiums across the country to watching at home with those closest to you in life, every sporting moment has a memory that will be talked about for years to come.
2025 was a year full of drama, surprise, and heartbreak in the sporting world. As the year comes to an end, sit back and remember some of the biggest sporting moments of the year.
January
It was a double for Dublin in the All-Ireland senior hurling and football club championships.
In football, Cuala were All-Ireland winners after defeating Errigal Ciaran, while Na Fianna were All-Ireland hurling winners after defeating Sarsfields of Cork.
February
While they may have missed out on the Six Nations, Ireland's victory over Wales ensured a third straight triple crown.
March
In athletics, the Indoor Championships were a huge success for Ireland, with Kate O'Connor winning silver in the women's Pentathlon.
Sarah Healy won gold in the women's 3000m, while Mark English won bronze in the 800m.
In the first of three trophies for Kerry, they defeated Mayo in the Division One final.
April
After years of heartbreak, near misses, and narrow margins, the wait was finally over for Rory McIlroy, as he won the Masters to complete his career Grand Slam.
In one of the shocks of the season, Dublin's dominance in the Leinster football championship came to an end, as they were defeated by Meath in the semi-finals.

May
The provincial championship finals brought incredible drama under the new rules, with Louth becoming Leinster champions after defeating Meath.
The Ulster final was another tightly contested game between Armagh and Donegal, with Jim McGuinness' side winning after extra time.
In the Champions League, Ireland had a new winner as Katie McCabe helped Arsenal to a 1-0 win over Barcelona.
June
Leinster won their first trophy in four years as they defeated the Bulls in the URC final at Croke Park.

In hurling, Limerick and Cork played out a classic Munster final, with the Rebels winning on penalties. There was also a major shock in the quarter-finals, as Dublin defeated Limerick.

July
After winning the league and Munster championship, Kerry were All-Ireland champions, and the first under the new rules, as they defeated Donegal in the final.
Following a difficult couple of seasons, Tipperary won the All-Ireland hurling final, defeating Cork in Croke Park.

The Open this year was hosted at Portrush, with Scottie Scheffler the winner.
The British and Irish Lions won the series in Australia 2-1, with Ireland full-back Hugo Keenan scoring the winning try in the second test.
Katie Taylor ended her trilogy against Amanda Serrano with another win.
August
Dublin were Ladies Football Champions once again after they defeated Meath in the final, in what was Hannah Tyrell's final game.
In Camogie, Galway stopped Cork's drive for three-in-a-row, as they won their first title since 2022.
It was further success for Rory McIlroy, as he won the Irish Open following a dramatic comeback which led to a play-off victory.
It was also a historic month for Irish football, as both Shelbourne and Shamrock Rovers qualified for the Conference League.
September
The great year for Irish golf continued, as Shane Lowry's putt ensured Europe would retain the Ryder Cup.
Ireland had a new world champion in boxing, as Lewis Crocker defeated Paddy Donovan to win the IBF welterweight world title, in an all-Ireland world title fight at Windsor Park.
It was a further quarter-final heartbreak for Ireland at a Rugby World Cup, as the women's side was defeated by France.
Kate O'Connor's incredible 2025 continued, as she won silver at the World Championships in Japan.
October
Shamrock Rovers were League of Ireland champions once again, their fourth in five years.
November
Troy Parrott became a hero of the nation, as he had the best five days of his career.
After his two goals gave Ireland a shock 2-0 win at home to Portugal, his last-second goal, and a hat-trick at that, secured a famous 3-2 win away to Hungary, and has Ireland in the play-offs for next summer's World Cup.
It was also a famous month for Shamrock Rovers, as they completed the double with victory over Cork City in the FAI Cup final.
December
Galway side Kilkerrin-Clonberne continued their dominance of ladies' club football as they won their fifth All-Ireland title in a row.
In camogie, Athenry and St Finbarr's will battle once again at the start of 2026 after the final was all square after a dramatic draw.
