Man sent forward for trial for alleged murder of Donegal businessman

A man accused of the murder of a Co Donegal businessman has been sent forward for trial to the Central Criminal Court.

Michael Maloney appeared by videolink at Letterkenny District Court on Monday.

Garda Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions had consented for the charges preferred against Maloney be sent forward to the Central Criminal Court.

Sergeant Collins asked the court for a four-week adjournment to allow for the preparation of a book of evidence in the case.

Maloney, 32, appeared at Letterkenny District Court by videolink from Castlerea Prison.

He is charged with the murder of Ardara businessman Stephen McCahill at his home at Beagh, Ardara in the early hours of Monday, January 5th.

Maloney, a relation of McCahill by marriage from Loughros Point in Ardara, only spoke to reply to his solicitor Mark Mullaney to agree to a four week adjournment in the case.

He is charged that on January 5th, at Beagh, Ardara, he did murder Stephen McCahill.

The charge is Contrary to Common Law and as provided for by Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1964.

McCahill, a 66-year-old father-of-two, was killed at his home at Beagh, Ardara in the early hours of Monday, January 5th.

Maloney was arrested a short time later and charged with his murder at a special sitting of Letterkenny District Court.

Judge Emile Daly adjourned the case until May 25th next for the service of a book of evidence in the case.
