82 per cent of people fear a recession in the next year, with 56 per cent believing it will be as bad or worse than the 2008 financial crash.

A Sunday Independent/Ireland Thinks poll revealed that the public is braced for a global recession in the wake of the war in Iran.

Many are fearful of an economic downturn within the next 12 months.

On Saturday, Sinn Féin called for the Dáil to be recalled from its Easter break.

Party leader Mary Lou McDonald accused the government of abandoning households as they struggle to meet the rising cost of energy.

Speaking at Sinn Féin's Easter commemoration in Kildare Town on Saturday, McDonald said families are in desperate need of help.

"The price of home heating oil has now doubled, and it’s just an extraordinary burden on 750,000 households, that’s three-quarters of a million households, and the government’s half measures have not worked.

"We need further intervention, so today Pádraig Mac Lochlainn, our Chief Whip, has written to the Ceann Comhairle asking for a recall of the Dáil."

McDonald's comments follow those of the Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA) describing surging fuel prices as a "national emergency" and calling for more Government support.

Speaking about the issue, Ger Hyland, IRHA president, said: "While existing supports were welcome, the continued increases in fuel prices have effectively eroded the benefit of those initial supports.

"The situation facing hauliers has intensified in recent days, with operators now under renewed financial pressure as diesel prices show no signs of stabilisation. This is a national emergency.”
