Scam calls: What are these +44 calls? Can I block them?

There has been a huge increase in scam calls with a '+44' prefix in the last few weeks, and people are being advised to avoid answering unknown numbers including the prefix.

Where are the calls coming from?

The prefix suggests the calls are coming from the UK, but they could also be from scammers in other countries.

They appear to be an effort to cheat people out of money in the busy buildup to Christmas.

What happens if I answer?

If you answer one of the scam calls, you will likely hear an automated voice, claiming to be anything from a job agency to Revolut. The calls will look for personal information.

You should be safe as long as you do not share any personal information.

The Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) said the only information they can gather if you do answer a call is that your number is active.

This could lead to an increase in scam calls.

ComReg is currentlty working on additional measures to screen and stop these scam calls.

Can I blok the calls?

Apple iPhone users that have updated their devices to the most recent operating system, iOS 26, can use a new screening feature for unknown numbers.

The feature automatically answers unknown numbers and asks the caller to state their name and the reason for their call.

Your iPhone will inform you of the response via call, allowing you to choose whether to answer or not.

There is also an option to silence unknown calls and send them straight to voicemail.

You can find call screening options by going to settings, Apps, and Phone.

Google Pixel phones offer a similar service.
