The commencement of a new “Dublin-Derry airlink” in 2026 was among the budgetary measures announced by the Government on Tuesday.

They said this would enable regular air travel between Dulin and Derry.

Announcing Budget 2026 in the Dáil, Public Expenditure Minister Jack Chambers said the Government was “committed to supporting vibrant, inclusive and sustainable communities throughout Ireland”.

He said it would double resources for its “Shared Island initiative”, involving a further billion euros out to 2035.

Mr Chambers said 2026 will see progress on the Narrow Water Bridge and Ulster Canal restoration projects, and further programmes on tourism, bioeconomy, and research.

The move was welcomed as “hugely positive for the entire northwest” by Sinn Féin.

Party MLA Padraig Delargy said: “City of Derry Airport has a huge role to play in our local economy, helping to connect communities and businesses across these islands.

“Sinn Féin in the Executive has been working to support the airport, and this additional service funded by the Irish Government will provide yet another boost.

“I’ll continue working with ministers and the other parties to unlock our region’s potential and drive its positive transformation.”
