Two people, understood to be a husband and wife, have died after a hit-and-run in west Dublin on St Stephen's Day.

The woman, named locally as Georgina Hogg-Moore (39), died at the scene and her husband, Anthony (40), died overnight of the injuries he sustained in the incident on Blanchardstown Road North at about 5.45pm on Thursday, according to The Irish Times.

Two other people were at the scene but they did not suffer injuries. It is not yet clear if they were known to the victims.

Gardaí arrested a man in his 40s in connection with the incident on Thursday evening.

He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda station in Dublin.

The road has now reopened after a technical examination by Garda forensic collision investigators.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them.

Any road users or pedestrians who were in the vicinity of Blanchardstown Road North between 5pm and 6pm and have camera footage, including dashcam, are asked to make it available to investigating gardaí.
