A 21-year-old man has been charged with having a 12 gauge improved shotgun in his possession for an unlawful purpose at Shanakiel in Cork in August.

Craig Condron of Templeacre Avenue in Gurranabraher in Cork city appeared before Cork District Court on Tuesday where he was charged in connection with serious incidents which occurred in Shanakiel and Churchfield in Cork on August 23rd last.

Det Garda Gary Purtill gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution. He said that he arrested Mr Condron at 9.57pm yesterday.

He subsequently charged the accused with two offences, namely having the improvised firearm and ammunition in his possession. The ammunition was described as being a 12 gauge Winchester brand cartridge.

Dt Garda Purtill told the court that Mr Condron made no reply when the charges were put to him under caution. Defence solicitor Frank Buttimer said that no application for bail was being made in the case at this juncture.

Sgt Gearoid Davis applied for the case to be adjourned to allow for DPP directions. Mr Condron was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on October 22nd.

Mr Condron was not required to speak during the brief hearing.

No outline of the facts of the case were given in court. However, gardaí previously indicated that an incident of criminal damage occurred at a property in Shanakiel in the city at 5.40pm on August 23rd.

A half an hour later, a motorcycle collided with a male pedestrian in his sixties on Churchfield Road in the city.

The pedestrian was later taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

A suspected firearm was subsequently seized by gardaí.
